Flashback Friday: Long Weekend in Maui

Along the road to Hana in Maui

If I had to name just one all time favorite vacation, I would say our trip to Maui over Labor Day two years ago.  It was a somewhat spontaneous trip because we had a few extra vacation days to use and no idea where to go. We already had a “big” vacation planned later in the year so we decided for this trip our goal was just to find the best deal possible.

I searched so many destinations looking for a bargain that I lost count–until I finally hit the jackpot. I found an Orbitz package deal for two that included nonstop flights to Maui, four nights at the Ritz Carlton, and a rental car. Five days isn’t nearly as long as I would have liked, but it fit our time and budget and turned out to be a near perfect trip.

The most valuable lesson we learned on this trip was don’t be afraid to ask for an upgrade! When we arrived at the Ritz we asked if any upgrades were available. At first they said no.  We thanked them for checking and then we had to wait about an hour for our room since we were a bit early. When we got our key and found our room, they had given us a suite–with a full kitchen, dining room and balcony with an ocean view. My best advice is book a room you’ll be happy with and politely ask for an upgrade. You’ve got nothing to lose, and it might just turn your vacation from really nice to truly unforgettable!

Luxury hotels like the Ritz don’t generally advertise discounted rates, but they will offer them as part of package where the discount isn’t so obvious. So if you have a specific place in mind, be sure to check package deals.

If you go to Maui, you’ll have the chance to take one of the most beautiful drives in the world: The Road to Hana. It took us a full day to drive there and back, taking our time and enjoying the stops along the way.
